Swedish culture evening
On Thursday September 30, xx (not sure of how many were there) gathered, at the wonderful Ericsson premises in Lindholmen, to listen to Mireille talking about her experiences when moving to Sweden and in particular the importance of her three different "buddies" in helping her adapt and feel at home here. Sandra discussed the different phases that most people pass through when moving to a new country and we then broke up into small groups. Everyone was given the opportunity to relate some embarrassing, amusing experience based on misunderstanding, culture shock or lack of knowledge of Swedish. Laughter ensued and it was obvious that this was something we all had in common. The aim of the evening was for us to share our experiences and to realize that we are never alone in our problems of finding our way in a new culture.
Ingalill organized the Swedish food and it was much appreciated by all. We started off with meatballs, small sausages, Kalles kaviar etc. and this was followed by coffee and "Princesstårta". Thanks for Mireille for organizing everything, to Ingalill for the food and to Sandra for her contribution.

International Womens' day
30 ladies met at hotel Odin on Monday, 8 th March on the International Womens' day and indeed were we international!
Thank you hotel Odin and Företagsbostäder for providing the conference room and prizes to the group.  It was much appreciated! http://www.hotelodin.se/
A special thanks to Nina Aksell for an inspiring evening!  It was truly amazing how she got 30 ladies to draw, share stories and go in depth in their imagination and finally came up with some interesting stories.  Who could have known that drawing two lines on a piece of paper could turn into a dragon that was lost and trying to find its way home?  But then again that's what happen when people meet and share thoughts, ideas and in this case drawings!

Stress and Wellness for the Professional Woman
Tuesday February 10, 2010
The evening included a short summary from a chapter on the effects of stress by Robin Fay-McNair from the book, The Balance Within, by Ester M. Sternberg, M.D. and a presentation on homeopathy by Elizabet Agar. Some of the basic points from the two presentations were: not all stress is bad, not all people react the same way to stress, our genes can help or hinder our ability to deal with stress, as well as our approach to stressful situations. However on a long term basis stress affects the immune system and leaves us open to attack from virus and bacteria. Some of the most common stressful circumstances are, feeling out of control, long periods of physiological stress like lack of sleep, poor nutrition, chronic illness like depression for example, and experiencing unusual or unknown circumstances (recognize that anyone?). There was some discussion on various signs of personal stress among the group and how it had affected people’s lives. This included both some of the ways stress improves people’s performance and also how it can over time be physically and emotionally damaging. Elizbet discussed some of the ways that homeopathy works and how it is a whole body approach to health and that it is based on the body’s ability to use natural ingredients to rebalance the health system. Jane Whiteman joined us during the social networking time with some food samples from her British goods store, Jane’ Place located at Nordenskioldsgatan 30 just off Linnegatan. Once again StayAt Hotel staff showed us around the facilities. In spite of the cold weather and ice we had a very warm and enjoyable evening together.

Christmas Drinks 2009
PWG’s Christmas Drinks 2009, was held at the Grand Hotel Opera here in Goteborg. The evening was organized by our fearless leader Helena Stromland and a grand success. The Grand Hotel offered a wonderful private room for us and treated the group to wonderful small open faced sandwiches. Helena organized a lottery and gift contributions to earn money for the organization “BibiJan” (Grandmothers helping Grandmothers) in Tanzania. PWG was able to send the earnings 2470 Kr to help these Grandmothers, who have lost their daughters to HIV, raise their grandchildren and start a school there in Tanzania. Helena had gift packages to send off with our group members to help sweeten their Christmas Cheer. The tentative schedule for 2010 was presented: February - Presentations on Stress Affects on Expatriates, March - Platform Meeting where members can present their business, April - Creating a book for your child, May – Designing your business cards, making your CV and interviewing in Sweden. The last of May will be a presentation – Planting Your Seeds by Robin Fay-McNair and last but not least June - Summer Drinks to send us off into the Swedish summer vacation season.

Embrace the Rain II, November 19 th, 2009
The 2009 presentation of Embrace the Rain II was on November 19 th at StayAt Hotel Apartments. Staff from the hotel began showing groups of five and six guests of hotel’s newly remodeled rooms at 18:00 as the members arrived. The presentation of Embracing the Rain was give by Robin Fay-McNair, coach, therapist and pilot and focused on how accepting ones situation as a chance to experience something new in life most often leads to a unexpected personal gift. Robin encouraged the group to use their creative energy and experiences to maximize their expat stay here in Goteborg. Afterward the presentation the twenty five members divided up into smaller groups to discuss any personal “rain clouds” that needed embracing. The groups practiced helping each other expand their perspective of how they could resolve and or benefit from their current situations. Last but not least they focused on how group members could support and benefit from their various skills and experience. Once again the energy of the evening was positive, creative, humorous and supportive. A number of great ideas came out of the discussions, some of which may lead to new presentations in 2010. To add a little frosting on the cake StayAt staff gave a door prize of one night’s free stay at the hotel.

Mind-Switch, October 19 th, 2009
On a Monday night, the 19 th of October, we had a group 12 people participate in the Mind-Switch Meeting. We had a lively discussion surrounding how to best communicate in meetings that take place over the phone between two different or several various countries. Ideas discussed were designating a moderator, professionalism, and the importance of timely follow-through. We also discussed how to best communicate in a Swedish business climate.

September 14th was the date of our 2009 Kickoff
We met at Maritz Kafe. It was a full house with great energy to starta our new year. Merel announced her plan to leave PWG and Sweden much to every one's disappointment. The good news is she is expecting a baby and a whole new life is beginning for her. Many thanks Merel for your leadership and sparkling personality that helped PWG get a good foothold for the future.

June 1, 2009, visit at Business Region Gothenburg

As the last event for the year, we were very proud to present an evening at Business Region Göteborg where we were presented information about the trade and industry life in the Gothenburg region. While admiring the great historic building Business Region Gothenburg houses in and enjoying some delicious finger food, we learned about the extensive service they provide to entrepreneurs setting up their business in the region, some of these service are free of charge!

April 20, 2009, Arbetsf örmedlingen
How do I find a job in Sweden? What are the things to keep in mind when writing my CV and cover letter? Do I need a work permit before looking for a job? What can Arbetsförmedlingen do for me in these times of economic downturn? What can the Swedish government do for me when I'm unemployed? These are just some of the questions that you had and Arbetsförmedlingen (the Swedish Public Employment Service) answered them all (and more) during this evening organized in association with West Sweden Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

March 18, 2009, Meet Your Brand!
During an inspiring evening, 30 women were introduced to the basic principles of personal branding. Frederike Van Urk and Mariska Groen (founders of A Brand Called Billy) together with Deirde Abrahamsson, lead the way on how to discover your own brand which can be helpful when you are considering starting your own business, want to apply for a job or are seeking a promotion within your job. After a quick tour on the basics of branding in general, we looked onwards to personal branding. The integration of values and visuals resulted in a great first impression on personal values! Frederike and Mariska introduced personal branding and their new concept ‘A Brand Called Billy’ at the same time. Anyone interested can book a workshop with them on www.abrandcalledbilly.com. The workshop ‘Meet Your Brand’ has a follow up workshop as well, ‘Activate Your Brand’. Please visit their website for more information and please note that PWG members are eligible for a special rate!

February 4, 2009, Members Platform
Many of our members have their own business, whether in the form of a company or because of the services they provide, the products they sell or the knowledge they share. On the 4th of February those members were given a platform to promote themselves and all other members got an opportunity to learn about the products and services available within PWG. Each members had 5 minutes to do a “quick pitch” of themselves and their company which resulted in wide variety of presentations on graphic facilitation, doula services, knitted dreams, coaching, landscaping design and much, much more. This event was organized in great collaboration with Hummingbird Lifestyle Travel who provided us with the location and refreshments!

December 3, 2008, Christmas drinks
About 40 women joined us on our second Christmas drinks mingling evening. Welcomed again by warm and friendly Mauritz Kaffe we celebrated the holidays and the energetic atmosphere was almost touchable!

November 20, 2008, Collaboration Workshop
Collaboration, or cooperation, is an important part of most people's day to day lives and it continues to increase in frequency and importance. Whether you're a business woman, a student, a volunteer or the multi-tasking mom, team work is the key to success! However, collaboration with others who may have different ways of working and communicating can be challenging, even more so when living or doing business in an unfamiliar culture. This, and more, was experienced by a group of 30 women during an evening facilitated by Diane H. Sonnenwald (professor at the Swedish School of Library and Information Science at the University of Gothenburg and University of Borås). Diane led a hands-on exercise that gave the participants a chance to practice and improve their inter-disciplinary team work skills and strategies. An evening full of hard work combined with laughter and some new insights in our own behaviour! A special thanks goes to WIN for providing us with a great location.

October 29, 2008, 2 nd edition Body Language Workshop
Due to great success in 2007, we decided to offer a 2nd version of our Body Language Workshop. Again, Sandy Anderson discussed the intricate nuances that are a part of our daily body language and how these affect our interactions at work, home, and in our social lives. The first topic was titled "Mirroring and How We Build Rapport" that demonstrated how social mirroring lends itself to cooperation amongst small and large groups that in turns leads to improved social and economic well-being on a macro scale. We practiced our skills at lying when we learned about various facial and postural gestures one subconsciously reveals when attempting to "cover" their deceit. And finally, we enjoyed hearing about the immune and attitude boosting benefits of the "Magic of Smiles and Laughter."

September 4, 2008, Kick off
We kicked off the new season in the great Mauritz Kaffe so kindly made available to us by it's owner Tord Wetter. While enjoying food and drinks Tord told us some of the history of this 30 year old coffee place and we were joined by Monica Björn of Gymnasium and one of our members, Sandra Yniguez, who both told us about the exciting activities their businesses have to offer. A great networking event that showed what PWG is all about!

June 5,2008, Summer drinks
We toasted on the great season we had with you while admiring the views of Gothenburg's harbour from the terrace of Göteborgs Operan

March 18, 2008, Embrace the Rain
Expatriate coach Robin Fay-McNair guided a group of women through some fun ways to think about how their expatriate experience can be maximized. This also included the non-expats in our group and those who have had earlier expat experience outside of Sweden since everybody can find herself once in a difficult situation that can be used to create something that can be taken forward in life. Robin brought a special guest, an expatriate woman from the ranks of Gothenburgs upward struggling success stories. It resulted in a fantastic evening full of energy, creativity and confidence.

January 31, 2008, Facebook
Facebook is a new way of networking on the Internet with which you are able to create your own community in cyberspace. But what is it exactly and how does it work? All the possibilities and pros and cons of this new networking hype were discussed during this evening by Merel Jansen. Her presentation included a demonstration on how to set up an account and how to make sure that what is private stays private. During this evening the members present learned about and discussed how this new tool can be used for both work and private life.

December 6, 2007, Christmas drinks
During our last event of 2007 a 30 odd group members mingled and chatted whilst enjoying the Christmas spirit and the generosity of Elite Park Hotel in the Bishops Arms pub.

November 15, 2007, Body Language Workshop

Facilitated by Sandy Anderson a group of 15 professional women with different backgrounds explored the ins and outs of body language. Sandy gave some insight into this interesting topic by discussing the following topics: 1. Power is in Your Hands, 2. Eye Signals and 3. Golden Keys to Making Great First Impressions and thus taught the participants everything to know on how to impress business contacts or other acquaintances without saying a word. Cultural differences in body language were also explored and through examples and role plays theory was put into practice. Due to the fantastic input of the group, the evening was full of new insights, interesting anecdotes and laughter.

September 24, 2007, Second Edition of Mind-Switch
The Mind-Switch activities of PWG serve as a think tank in which several members of the group come together to brainstorm ideas & challenges. Members wishing to put a real thought or problem behind business ideas or other career challenges have found a platform during these evenings. The small group sizes during Mind-Switch events create an informal environment that has proven to be a fertile basis for discussion and sharing. Our second Mind-Switch event was again a success. 10 international women with very different backgrounds were present and various issues regarding professional life in Sweden were discussed. How to find new clients for my business, were can I find more opportunities for temporary jobs, how can I reinvent myself now I am currently without a job and were to look for inspiration regarding a career change were amongst the topics that were discussed.
